The Crew

Tom

Tom is Korvessa’s captain, chief engineer, and medical officer. He has been boating Pacific Northwest waters since he was seven years old. At age 22, he bought a converted lifeboat-turned-sailboat (Walkabout) and taught himself to sail – not without a few mishaps and lessons learned along the way. He now races as much as possible and particularly likes the turbulent winter races. A third culture kid, Tom grew up in Kirkland, Washington, Melbourne, Australia, and Bandung, Indonesia with periodic visits to family in Wales and France. Tom is a Physician Assistant and looks forward to keeping us all healthy – or at least alive – during our travels.

Sandi

Sandi is Korvessa’s navigator, head teacher, and documentarian. Sandi’s first exposure to sailing was on her fourth date with Tom. They had engine failure on Walkabout, needed to sail into anchor, and Sandi ended up upside down in the bilge helping to fix an oil leak. So she figures she’s been ready for the cruising life since the beginning. Sandi is a world traveler, having worked for almost a decade in Central and Eastern Europe. She has traveled to other far reaches of the globe on a shoestring when opportunities presented themselves. She has worked in the nonprofit world for twenty years, with a focus on education and program evaluation. She is also a competitive swimmer and looks forward to shifting her sights to more open water swimming. Sandi will be head teacher aboard Korvessa, though she is not sure how much her specialty of teaching adults English as a Second Language will translate into teaching children whose native language is English.

Dylan

Dylan means son-of-the-sea in Welsh. Strong-willed and intense – just like the sea – this kiddo has been sailing since he was three weeks old (mainly because his parents wanted to prove to themselves that they could still sail with kids). He will be 5.5 years old when we depart. Dylan loves whales, Legos, the Martian, cabins, and exploring new places.

Anderson (Andy)

Youngest and most whiny of our crew, Andy will be 3.5 years old when we depart. Andy loves Paw Patrol, bananas, and copying everything his older brother does. Despite his loquaciousness, Andy is somewhat shy and clingy. He is blossoming into a little reading prodigy and will also likely become our resident dinosaur expert.

Demon

Demon is a 14-year old Siamese Himalayan kitty and has lived more than half her life aboard boats. She moved aboard Walkabout when she was only 8 weeks old and later onto Fairhaven. Though she has gotten used to the warm rooms and slippery floors of houses in her advanced age, we are certain she will love the sunny pilot house and cozy spaces on Korvessa. But maybe not the engine.
